Christianity is a way of life and all that must practice it must show that they really are living up to the task. Jesus left a mark on Earth before He returned to Heaven, and His Disciples still followed the same footsteps, and earned themselves the Title “Christians”.
In today’s 21st Century, Christianity has assumed different meanings. This Guest Post highlights some of the misconceptions and ills that are gradually drenching into the Christianity we have today.
The photograph associated with this post went viral on the internet 2 weeks ago especially among Nigerians. The picture shows a lady, lying supine on the floor of a church, apparently undergoing deliverance. The striking feature of the photo is that of a lady ‘prayer warrior’ who placed her right hand at the pubic region of the victim (pubic region is the location of the vagina).
It has been confirmed that the lady on the ground was branded “possessed by the spirit of fornication”. The idea of lying hands on her pubic region by the prayer warrior is to ward off the demon of fornication from the lady’s vagina since it is the pathway for copulation during sexual contact. Additionally, you could observe a group of men (apparently prayer warriors and men of God) who also gathered beside the lady, closely observing proceedings. Their eyes were obviously fixed on the lady’s pubic region and one wonders what will be going on in their minds.
This kind of act is what we see these days in some of the so called Pentecostal churches. They believe so much in the existence and potency of demons such that almost every action or inaction is attributed to demons. To them, there is a demon for every thing: demon of stealing, demon of adultery, demon of fornication, demon of fund embezzlement, demon of fighting, demon of traffic offence, demon of drinking etc.
Even on television programs, they cajole people into believing that placing their hand on the screen during prayers will guarantee healing. Some preachers ask folks to place their hand on the area of their body that is sick and you see people placing their hands even in strange areas. I have seen men place their hands around their penis, some put their hands inside their mouth, some even put theirs in the pocket for financial healing.
Christianity is living by Example.
Some religious people will quote a lot of bible passages to support such actions. I believe in the potency of prayers especially when well said. But what we see today in our churches is strange to Christianity. All these are driven by the quest to extract money from church attendees.
Demons may be existing but they should not be blamed for everything. We should not blame demons when a public servant embezzlers public fund, we should not blame demons when a lady decides to be a prostitute, we should not blame the devil when folks engage in armed robbery, we should not blame the devil when accidents occur on our bad roads. The other day, a group of church folks gathered at the Ore end of the Benin-Ore road praying and casting out demons that cause accidents on the road. Meanwhile the road is dilapidated, has a lot of pot holes and is a clear death trap. It is clear that those prayers were channeled wrongly. Fixing the road is the antidote for the accidents.
Poverty, desperation, greed and in fact stupidity are the things that fuel this abuse of our dear religion Christianity. Let us respect the doctrines of our Lord Jesus Christ and practice the religion according to the bible, with good conscience and maturity. Stop ridiculing Christianity!
May God grant you wisdom to hear, understand and learn.
