Satan, The Prank That Never Worked – When the topic for July SynchroBlog: Light Summer Reading was announced, I thought I was being pranked into thinking about pranks that are significant to our lives as Christians and also our drive to attain perfection.

My mind immediately traveled to some of the pranks that satan tried to play on Jesus in order to test if truly He was the Son of God, or if truly Jesus knows His rights as the Son of God.

I believe that satan already knows that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and ‘it’ knows that Jesus Christ is made in the image and likeness of God, and that Jesus is God-in the flesh. So what exactly would ‘it’ be thinking of in trying to prank Jesus on the mountain?

Satan used one of the weapons of carnality which is food to try to lure Jesus into bowing down for ‘it’. Imagine at a time when Jesus was hungry after spending forty days and forty nights communing with God.

One wonders if satan is forgetful or plain stupid. How can you see someone who has been in the presence of God that long and you still come to prank Him?

Is this a Prank or Temptation from Satan?

Prank on Jesus

Many people call what happened between satan and Jesus at the mountain (in Matthew chapter 4) – temptation, but I see it as a mere prank and it is very obvious what would have happened if Jesus had fallen for the prank.

– You and I would not have had the CONFIDENCE to believe or even call ourselves Christians.

But because Jesus is Omnipotent, Omnipresent and Omniscient (Omniscience); He is the Alpha and Omega; the All-knowing; the One who knows the end from the beginning, He was able to knock-off the pranks from the devil.

As satan’s prank did not work on Jesus Christ, he has been roaming the World trying to find who to steal, Kill and devour.

Satan’s Prank on Man

As the pranks of satan did not work on Jesus Christ, ‘it’ became angry and has since exerted ‘it’s’ anger and revenge on Man.

Jesus was able to rebuff satan simply because He is THE WORD OF GOD, and He used the Words of God in His responses to the devil’s advances.

To avoid being caught up in the pranks of satan, I will sincerely beg you to move closer to God through Jesus Christ. Don’t let the old deceiver to deceive you once again and as usual pull ‘its’ pranks on you. Repent and be saved. Satan’s Prank on Man is imminent.

To my mind, a prank depends on the motives of the prankster: You're only trying to ridicule or irritate the person you're pranking. You don't really expect success. So you're saying the devil didn't really expect Jesus to fall for any of its temptations; it was only trying to pester him.

Maybe so. Historically, Christians have interpreted the temptations figuring Satan didn't know Jesus is God. Had it known better, yeah, it would have realized these temptations were utterly futile. They'd be pranks at best. The word πειράζω/"to try out" doesn't necessarily mean temptation. So you might have something there.

Then again, the devil lies to itself about as often as it lies to us. Maybe it figured it had a real shot, now that God had become human.
