The pronouncement by Pastor William kumuyi of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry that Christmas celebration is an act of idolatry did not come to me as a surprise. I was a little boy when Pastor William Kumuyi floated his church, which started as a house ministry in Lagos. Then, Pastor William Kumuyi told his church members that is was a sin to own televisions. Yes, members of the church smashed and destroyed their televisions. After all, the General overseer has spoken.
Deeper Life ministry is characterized by a lot of doctrines. I am not here to condemn the Church and it’s doctrines. But, those who come to equity must come with clean hands. I want to remind Pastor William Kumuyi that we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on Christmas.
Why We Celebrate Christmas
Christmas day – 25th December may not be the actual date of His birth, but We as Christians have adopted it as a day of remembrance of His birth. Kumuyi can argue that Christmas originated from pagan practices. Yes, but the fact is that we do not celebrate any pagan god. We celebrate our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
We are aware that Pastor William Kumuyi celebrates his own birthday. Yes, some of his members post advertorial in national dailies on his birthday. Does he know the origin of birthday celebrations? There are more burning issues that should occupy the mind and time of the respected clergy man but not Christmas. Pastor William Kumuyi’s energy should be channeled towards salvation of souls, condemnation of sin and condemning the government when they derail.
Pastor William Kumuyi’s son had an elaborate and lavish wedding in Jamaica against the doctrine of the church. Some pastors were punished and demoted for that but not Pastor William Kumuyi. He threatened to resign but of course, we all know that he would not. How can one resign from his business? The comfort and benefits of that office will not let him.
To all Christians, remember that Christmas is when we remember the birth of Jesus Christ our savior. The only way to justify the energy and time devoted to this celebration is to live our lives like Christ himself. Love your neighbor as yourself. Do unto others as you would want then do to you. Live your life to reflect that of Jesus Christ.
I wish all of you a merry Christmas!
